Expository Outline

Hebrews 8–10 presents the theological core of the Epistle to the Hebrews, demonstrating the superiority of Christ's eternal priesthood, the true heavenly sanctuary, and the once-for-all sacrifice of the New Covenant.

Expository Divisions

  1. A Minister in the True Tent (Hebrews 8:1–6):
    • Christ as High Priest seated at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
    • The earthly tabernacle was merely a shadow and copy of the heavenly pattern showed to Moses on the mountain.
  2. The New Covenant Promised and Inaugurated (Hebrews 8:7–13):
    • Quoting Jeremiah 31:31–34 in full to prove the obsolescence of the first covenant and the eternal nature of the new heart, forgiven sins, and unmediated knowledge of God.
  3. Blood of the Eternal Covenant (Hebrews 9:1–28):
    • The limitations of animal blood: bulls and goats could only purify the flesh, but the blood of Christ purifies the conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
    • Entering once for all into the holy places, not with the blood of goats and calves, but by means of His own blood.
  4. The Finality of the Sacrifice (Hebrews 10:1–18):
    • The repetitive nature of Levitical sacrifices stood as an annual reminder of sin.
    • By a single offering, Christ has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
